True Linkswear Ushers in a New Era of Golf Shoe Design

Golf shoe design has come on a long way from the turn of the 20th century, when hackers on the marshy links courses of the UK used heavy hobnail boots to tear around the course, all too literally at times. The nails provided traction in the muddy conditions but tended to rip up courses and…..feet!

By the 1920s, things had improved, if you were a man that is, when the Field and Flint Company made the first golf shoe. These shoes were fitted with the metal spikes that were commonplace until recent times. Women’s golf shoes took a little longer to be developed, reaching shops by the 1940s.

Until the introduction of rubber soles in the 1970s, the golf shoe changed little in design or function over this time. Rubber’s waterproof qualities were welcomed in the 70s but comfort was not ideal, so 10 years later waterproof leather became the material of choice for most golf professionals. Eventually, the skills in manufacturing this material evolved so that a waterproof and breathable leather material could be used, making the shoe more comfortable.

At this time however, a debate raged. The traditional metal spikes that adorned the sole of golf shoes were becoming a problem according to many golf course experts. The wear and tear caused by the unforgiving spikes was making greens bouncy, wobbly and uneven as well as taking their toll on the fairways and tees too. Many courses now outlaw metal spikes in favour of non-metal spikes. These new spikes are now a fundamental part of a golfer’s gear.

(Editor: As a boy, I used to love the sound of the metal spikes on the concrete – made me feel like a real golfer! The good ole days…)

That, however, could soon change.

True Linkswear are the latest alternative in golf shoe design, a shoe so comfortable, it feels like a slipper, so the adverts say…

Certainly the credentials are impressive, the shoes are fully endorsed by the PGA Tour and are the lightest golf shoe ever to be worn by players in a PGA event. The designers have done away completely with the midsole and spikes, instead favouring a 2.5mm “Ergo-Traction” outsole, with stability bars, ensuring that not only do you do less damage to the course, but also your feet.

The shoes are guaranteed waterproof for a year and for additional comfort, the heel and fitted sock liner mean that one of the most often overlooked components of your golf swing, your feet, will not only be far more comfortable, but will have a surer and firmer footing on the ground.

Incredibly, the True Linkswear shoe maintains that all these additions to comfort and lack of spikes is not only better for you and the course, but also that the shoes have lost none of the grip of their spiked counterparts.

The big question however is do the shoes make a difference? PGA pro’s Vijay Singh and Ryan Moore are certainly converts, Moore calling the shoes “the lightest most comfortable golf shoes I have ever worn.” At prices of $159.99 to $199.99 for a pair, they would need to be.

In fact, the True Linkswear shoe is just another form of golfing hybridization. Now that 3,4 and 5 Irons are being turned into hybrids for many players, balls are now a hybrid of distance and control, so the humble golf shoe is now a hybrid of the spike soled shoe of the past and a comfortable training shoe.

It’s hard to say whether the True Linkswear shoe will knock shots off a typical round, but even if it can take the strain off your feet and put your concentration on the golf course, then that can only be a good thing.

I picked up an extremely lightweight minimalist pair of big name womens shoes at the local golf joint and wondered why women can have lightweight, flexible, comfortable shoes but men still only have the clunky heavyweight feet hurters to chooes from. I for one am glad to see a minimalist offering!
