Margara Golf Club – A peaceful golfing haven in glorious Northern Italy

Located in the rural heart of northern Italy, close to the cities of Genoa, Milan and Turin lies the verdant 36-hole golfing haven of Margara Golf Club.

Gorilla Golf’s own golfing legend Tommy Priest recently visited the picturesque venue and found himself playing a golfing gem.

The Golf Courses

There are two 18-hole golf courses at Margara, the Percorso Rosso (Red Course) and Percorso Giallo (White Course) and each offers a very different challenge but are suited to golfers of all abilities.

Percorso Rosso – The Red course is the shorter of the two at 6048 yards, but don’t be fooled by its brevity. Tom played this course on his holiday and ranks it as a real test of golf, where accuracy with your shots is far more important than spanking the ball great distances.

The Percorso Rosso is a Par 72 course that requires not just accurate shots, but also for the player to think carefully about shot selection.  It is a fabulous test of golf, short enough for higher handicap players, but cerebral enough to give  even the low handicapper a real test.

Percorso Giallo – The White course is a slightly longer Par 72 course at 6176 yards, but has been designed to give guests at Maragara a very different test. This course isn’t as tight as the Red and even has the feel of a Scottish links.

The fairways and greens are wider, but still provide players with a fantastic test of their golfing skill. The par 3’s at 9 and 18 both require a nervous shot over water to hit a well-protected green that will give any golfer a real test.

The cost to play both courses is the same with 18 holes costing €55 on a weekday and €75 on a weekend.

The Facilities

There’s plenty to entertain yourself beyond golf at Margara Golf Club. The course boasts its own fantastic restaurant, offering some of the finest northern Italian cuisine and wines in the area. You can book a golf and lunch package on any weekday from just €80 per person or €95 of a weekend.

The course also boasts its own fantastic outdoor swimming pool, with pool seating, cart/trolley hire, a hard surface tennis court, a superb club house with pro shop, driving range and even a small guesthouse on site which offers single, double and apartment rooms for those who would like to experience a short break.

A 1 night Golf & Foresteria package including a night in the 3* guesthouse, with breakfast, two lunches at the restaurant and 2 rounds of golf costs just €220 per person on a weekday.

Tommy’s View

I was thrilled by the welcome I received at Margara golf club and it was certainly the golfing highlight of my trip to Italy. The staff and manager were fabulous and welcoming and the surroundings and location made golfing and dining there spectacular. If you are in northern Italy for any reason, it would certainly be a place I would recommend.

I played the red course and have to say that it was a superb challenge. Don’t be fooled by the relatively short distance of the course, accuracy with your tee and iron shots is vital if you are going to score well. The greens are tricky but in superb condition and the fairways were immaculate.

Indeed, I was so enamoured of the place that I wish I’d booked another day to play the White course, but I know for sure that as soon as I get chance, I’ll be returning to play it.
