Golfing La Dolca Vita – Exploring some of Italy’s finest golf courses – Part One

Home of the Molinari Twins, Constantino Rocca and Matteo Manassero, Italy may not be your first thought when it comes to European golfing hotspots, but as those names suggest, it is a country with a fine golfing pedigree and heritage.

This extends beyond producing some of the most talented European players of the last 20 years as the country also boasts some outstanding golfing opportunities for those willing to visit “the boot”.

Outlined below are some of Italy’s finest golfing establishments that Gorilla Golf’s Tommy Priest had the good fortune to spend some time at recently.

Tommy urges you to check out the following courses and golf your operators to ensure your time in this beautiful, scenic country is spent enjoying the verdant fairways and greens of some of its most impressive courses!

1. Golf Club Margara

A fabulous resort which offers two 18-hole courses (the White and Red). Tom played the Red recently and enjoyed the round immensely. Tom also liked the look of the White course, so much so he’s desperate to return to play it!

Centrally located in Northern Italy within an hour of Turin, Genoa and Milan, this is a great golf club to begin your vacation and where you can be assured of a warm welcome from the manager and her staff. Why not try their Golf and Pasta packages, which offer a fabulous 3-course lunch and a round of golf on either course, all for less than €100.

2. Golf Club Feudo Di Asti

This quirky 18-hole course was designed by Graham Cooke and is a wonderful challenge of golf allowing you to use your full range of shot-making skills.

The design is reminiscent of a British Links course, yet set amidst beautiful Italian countryside, offers a fabulous place in which to enjoy 18 holes of golf.

Situated close to Alessandria and Turin, a round of golf here can cost from as little as €45 for 18 holes.

3. Golf Club I Girasoli

I Girasoli is one of the most innovative golf courses in the world, being the only one we can find that uses virtually no chemicals in the course upkeep, using only natural products to keep the course in great shape. It works too as this tough course is in great shape and is a real test of golf.

For a little extra fun, owner Luciano Roccia is the founding member of the Italian Foot Golf Association and is in the process of adding a brand new 18-hole foot golf course to his already impressive hotel and golf complex.

Golf Club I Girasoli is located in Carmagnola, just a few miles south of Turin.

If you are looking for the perfect place to base your stay in Italy to explore these golfing hot spots then I’d recommend the fabulous, 4* Relais Sant ‘Uffizio hotel. Not only is the hotel beautifully appointed, the staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful and the rooms spacious and well furnished, but the hotel is one of Italy’s foremost golfing specialists.

Book in here and the hotel will help you organise your itinerary in fine detail to ensure you get to play any or all of the courses outlined above during your stay, by producing your own bespoke and personalised golf package.

Check back onto the Gorilla Golf Blog shortly for Part Two of this insight into some of the best golf courses Italy has to offer.
