For Northerners: 6 tips before the season begins

So, for us who have to suffer winter, golf came to an end a couple of months ago but… the new season is just a few weeks away.  Hopefully, because of all the weekends at home during the pause, you’ve re-learned the names of your kids.

Here are 6 short tips on how to pass the cold time quickly and get ready before your course opens up…

1. Check your clubs: clean them, caress them and above all, change your grips. Take them to your golf shop to change them should cost very little.  New grips give you the feeling of having a new set of clubs.

2. Take advantage of your extra time to do some stretching. You can do this at home and it will only take a few minutes per day. I took a look at Sport Fitness Advisor and even though they talk about warming up before tee-off, why not do some of these exercises in the off-season? Make them part of your daily routine now and continue during the season.

Often players get fatigued around the 13th or 14th hole, costing them a few extra stokes.  By starting a little earlier this year, you will be in better shape, your body will allow you to play more golf and you will have more fun.

3. As an assistant manager of a major golf course this tip is near and dear to my heart. Learn the rules with better knowledge and understanding of the rules, you might save some strokes. I found the United states Golf Association website, is a good stop for useful  animations and quizzes.

4. Improve your short game. Phil Mickelson shares the secrets of his consistently great short game in his first instruction book:  Secrets of the Short Game (available from  He explains every shot of the short game. Read this book now when the weather is cold – you’ll be sure to shave a couple of strokes off around the Green.

5. Fly to Marrakech. I’ve just got back (look for my post soon). Golf is booming there.  In Marrakech 5 courses are currently open. The oldest,  ”The Marrakech Royal Golf” opened in 1923. Ten courses are under construction and will open in the next two years.   They are all excellent courses and can be played at an affordable price (average round is about 50 euros).

6. Finally, get some extra quality time bonus points with the family for credit this summer!
