Rory-McIlroy-the-best-golfer-in-2014

At the moment, Rory McIlroy seems capable of beating every human golfer on the planet. Not content with smashing a 436 Yard Drive at the recent Scottish Open and following that up with victory in three top ranking golf events, including the British Open and US PGA Championship , in 2013 Rory had his eyes set on a very different challenge.

One of the ways that top golf club and ball manufacturers test the accuracy, distance and durability of their golf clubs and balls is to entrust them to a computer controlled hitting machine. This clever piece of equipment can be programmed to hit the ball at the same angle, at the same speed time and time again.

Of course, you’d think by being able to rely on these parameters via a computer, this would make the hitting machine arguably the most accurate shot maker in the world. After all, once you have set the machine up as you require for the shot you need, it should be able to make that shot repeatedly.

So it was up against this somewhat unusual opponent that Rory McIlroy set out to test himself, you can find out the results of the challenge by watching the video below. I do heartily recommend that you turn up the volume and listen to the exchanges between Rory and the ‘Hitting Machine’ as they are very funny at times.

So what can we learn by watching this video? The first thing that strikes me is the absolutely uncanny accuracy that McIlroy displays, particularly with his irons. Although there is no indication of how heavily edited this piece may have been (and my guess is that it may have been considerably reduced in time), the fact that he hits so many shots over a varying degree of distances with such astonishing accuracy is enviable.

However, what I am particularly in awe of is his final shot. It is one thing to adjust your aim for a target on the ground that lies a further or shorter distance away. While the accuracy of golf professionals on these types of shots are mesmeric, it is something else when your actual target is high above you in the air.

This calls on Rory to work out not just how far he hits his club, but also how high and not only that, he has to be able to judge the trajectory of the shot so that it lands inside the washing machine’s open door.

That requires a very different ability to appreciate the shape and height of your golf shot, more so than simply judging the distance when using a certain club.

While I am certain that McIlroy would not be the only golfer who would be able to take on a Golf Laboratory Computer Controlled Hitting Machine and emerge unscathed, what is clearly evident on this video and which has been a feature of Rory’s immense form of the past few weeks, is his control of the golf ball.

It is worth remembering that this film was shot back in 2013, when Rory wasn’t in the best form of his career and was on a slide in the world rankings.

However this amusing video clearly shows that in the battle of Man Vs Machine, it is still us mere mortal beings that come out on top, provided you’ve got the golfing skill of the world’s best golfer at present.

But for amateur hackers, don’t worry too much about the threat of robot golfers taking over your local course. Sure, they can hit accurately and the lack of wheels is a problem, but the good news is, they wouldn’t get onto most golf courses due to the fact they would not be dressed in suitable golf attire.
