Luke Donald’s Golf Game
What is clear from the analysis of Luke’s game and the statistics is that to be the best golfer in the world, it is not a prerequisite to be able to thump the ball vast distances. Indeed, for the humble amateur trying to improve their game the fact that Donald’s dominance is not caused by his length from the tee should be cause to celebrate.
Where the Englishman does excel is in his consistency but there are two aspects here that are inextricably linked. Donald’s consistency on tour in terms of finishes, places and winning events is mirrored and enhanced by his consistency of swing.
There is al almost metronomic grace to Donald’s swing that belies the power and skill involved in producing it.
Donald never seems to thrash at any ball, his swing is one of carefully controlled aggression, which may result in less distance from the tee, but a far greater degree of accuracy than most of his contemporaries (as the statistics show).
Allied to this accuracy from the tee is one of the world’s finest, if not the very best, short game in the world. While Donald may be better than average with a pitching wedge or less in his hand, he really comes to life when it comes to scrambling.
Quite simply, Donald is able to negate the fact that he may not have the highest greens in play percentage, by the fact that his short game is so good, particularly from the hazards where Donald ranks number 1 in the world both from the rough and from the sand.
All this is achieved thanks to his simple, graceful swing which has a hypnotic quality. The fact that Luke can rely on it to produce the goods so often, is the basis for his consistently low scoring and the reason why he is the top ranked player in the world today.
Ally that with a fierce will-to-win, but a mindset that doesn’t allow him to dwell on mistakes past, but work towards improving on the next shot and you have recipe for a golfer who should be challenging for the majors, and winning them, for many years to come.
