Greame McDowell

Former US Open Champion Graeme McDowell found form perhaps a week later than he would have liked. After missing the cut at The Masters, the Ulsterman returned to form with his first win on tour since  the 2010 Andalucia Valderrama Masters at the RBC Heritage last weekend.

His victory came via a play-off after he tied with Webb Simpson on -9 for the tournament in testing conditions, so let’s discover a little more about the likeable Irishman and his clubs for the 2013 season.

Career Highlights:

There are certainly two highlights in McDowell’s career so far that stand out above anything else he has achieved in the game. First up was his US Open victory in 2010, when he led the field almost from start to finish before hanging on in testing conditions at Pebble Beach to register his first Major title.

The second highlight of McDowell’s career came at Celtic Manor in the 2010 Ryder Cup competition. Despite incessant rain and a sodden course that made play very tough for both sides, McDowell had the chance to take victory for Europe if he could defeat Hunter Mahan in his singles match.

While Mahan’s fluffed chip at the last would ultimately end the US hopes of a draw, it was the incredible putt at the 16th hole (below) to put McDowell two up with two to play, securing at least a half and leaving him needing to half just one remaining hole to lift the cup outright.

Career Lowpoints:

The toughest time in McDowell’s career as a professional came between May 2004 and March 2008 when he failed to win a tournament and as a result, his ranking during this period was at its lowest ebb.  McDowell will also look to improve on his Masters record in future years, having failed to reach the top ten of the tournament, and only avoiding the cut twice in six appearances so far at Augusta.

What does the future hold for Graeme McDowell?

It is pretty clear on the back of his RBC Heritage victory last week that McDowell has put a lean couple of years behind him and returned to winning ways. Whether he will be able to replicate the successes he enjoyed in 2010, remain to be seen but he certainly has the talent to achieve more tournament victories.

McDowell also displays commendable aptitude under pressure, as shown by his Ryder Cup performances and US Open win. As such, McDowell should be looking to contend more in the Majors over the next few years. he is a fine tee to green player and his putting holds up well even in the most testing of circumstances and it would not surprise me to see him adding his name underneath another Major in the next few years.

It is definitely a sweet victory for McDowell. He waited for three years to get this win again. His humility is also inspiring.

I really like how Graeme stays consistent with his shafts throughout his woods and hybrids. Same shaft, just a little more heavy once he gets to the 3 wood and hybrids. It’s tough to be consistent if you have different shafts in your driver verses other woods. They will feel different, swing different, and perform different. Thanks for the post!
