It is the time of the year when people who perhaps do not play the game of golf, often consider buying a loved one a golfing present. One of the most popular items to gift someone, especially a high-handicap golfer, or a beginner, is a golf instruction video, or a golf instruction book.

Certainly both of these items have their use, but can they really improve your game, or is there a better way you can help a loved one shoot lower scores on the course next year?

That’s what Gorilla Golf have attempted to find out…

One of the first thing to note is that a quick search of some of the less scrupulous parts of the web will find people proclaiming they have an ‘instant fix’ to a part of your game.

They may claim to be able to knock ten strokes off your handicap thanks to their magical system, or that they can make you drive the ball as far as Bubba Watson, putt better than Brad Faxon, hit irons as crisply as Tiger Woods or be as deadly around the greens as Phil Mickelson.

Ask yourself one question; if they could, why haven’t we heard a top level professional extolling the virtue of these schemes? Then ignore them and look for something based in reality.

Of course, books and videos, especially those endorsed by professionals and top level golf coaches, can be of great benefit. They can clearly demonstrate the correct techniques for golfers to follow and provide handy hints that allow players to use these techniques, at first on the range and then out on the course.

Certainly, these can have success. Especially for a beginner golfer who is learning the game and wants to learn the basic fundamentals of how to grip a club, the stance and how to swing the club properly.

But here’s the absolutely vital question; just how do you know what you are practising on the range is what the professional is teaching you in the video or in their book?

New technology is helping in this area markedly. You can now, for example, download apps on the iPad or iPhone or Android device which will allow you to take a video of your swing and even compare it against the swing of other players or a ‘perfect’ swing for you to follow.

The idea being is you can see where you are going wrong and put it right.

So let me ask you this question, if you had a broken arm and could accurately diagnose it, who would you trust to put it right? Yourself, or a health professional?

That’s the problem with a video or book system, there is no feedback about how you are performing the skills. It may feel like you are swinging just like it says in the book, but what if you aren’t and as a result, your golfing ability is paying the price?

This is where a lesson or series of lessons with a golf professional more than justifies the cost. Not only do you get the same level of expert input to help you improve that you get in a video or book, but most importantly of all, you get feedback.

Not all of this is verbal, a good golf pro will use tools such as video, photographs and an array of other gadgets and gimmicks to help improve your swing and they’ll feedback what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.

What this means is that you are then focusing on improving the parts of your swing that are working well and putting right those that are working against you. You can’t do that quickly and successfully without expert feedback from a golfing professional.

Much is made in the media of the fact that some players, Bubba Watson is arguably the most famous example, who have never had a golf lesson in their life and eschew the ‘traditional’ methods of playing to develop their own successful style.

However, this tends to overlook the fact that players like Bubba are the exception rather than the rule. Sure, you could improve yourself as a golfer through books, video and working on your own, but you give yourself a much better chance of regular, quicker and more reliable, long-term progress by booking a few golf lessons with a pro.

So, if you are thinking of helping out that improver golfer, forget the books and video and visit your local course or range and speak to the golf pro about a lessons package.
