What do I Need to Play Urban Golf and Where can I Play it? Urban Golf Part 2

Following on from our first expose about urban golf, the second article in the series looks at the actual mechanics of playing the game, what equipment you require to play the game, what rules are generally used to play (and some of the more common modifications made to these rules), and where you can go to experience the game.

What are the main rules of urban golf?

One of the great appeals of urban golf is that you can experience a fresh challenge every time you play and as such, there is a need for the rules to be flexible enough to reflect this.

Urban golf

While rules are flexible and open to a degree of variance depending on which part of the world you play in, there are some general rules that tend to remain the same, namely:

  1. You should always play the ball where it lies (unless it is unsafe or likely to cause damage if you do so)
  2. Each player should have access to the same number and type of clubs and the same type of ball and the number of clubs that can be used in the round should be agreed beforehand.
  3. To protect your club head and the local environment, you should carry with you a small piece of padded Astroturf or similar, on which you can place the ball before each shot. Meaning that you don’t risk damaging your club on concrete surfaces, or upsetting people by taking divots out of grassy areas. All shots where there is a risk of damage to the environment, your club or the player if the ball is played where it lies, should be taken off your patch.

Indeed, the rules about causing damage to land, property or person is arguably the most important rule of urban golf. Games should never be played in residential areas and should always show respect for people and property.

Other than these simple rules, the major rules of urban golf are very much the same as traditional golf.

What equipment do I need to play urban golf?

One of the most appealing aspects of urban golf is that it is generally much cheaper to start playing than traditional golf. For a start, you only need one club to play, instead of a bag full, and there is no need for specialist clothing, golf club memberships, green fees and suchlike.

Indeed, all that is required for a game of urban golf is:

  • A patch of padded Astroturf. A piece about six to eight inches square is ideal. The material used on driving range mats is the perfect choice. Your local driving ranges may have discarded mats available from which you can obtain a piece.
  • A golf club of your choice (though most urban golfers elect to play either a 9-iron or Pitching Wedge)
  • Your choice of golf ball.

The golf ball is the critical choice. Obviously a traditional ball, even the softer compound ones used by professional golfers, are still far too hard and would cause huge damage if they hit a person or property. As such, urban golf is played with a variety of different balls, these can include:

  • Tennis ball
  • Squash ball
  • ‘Waffle’ practice golf ball
  • Foam practice golf ball
  • An almostGOLF practice ball (these are choice golf balls for many keen urban golfers. They look and play like original balls but the inside has thousands of tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide, which means the balls are much lighter – just a third of the weight- and much softer meaning they are ideal for use in urban areas.

Other than that, all you require is a good imagination to set up a challenging hole or two, or even a full 18-hole course around your local area that will allow you to enjoy the game to the full.

Where can I go to play urban golf?

If you would like to play urban golf against other competitors in organised events, then the good news is that the game has spread across the globe considerably from its original roots in California. In the United States, the game is hugely popular at many college campuses and is also widely played in Portland, San Diego, Chicago, Washington State, New York State and St. Petersburg (Fl). The game is also played in Nova Scotia in Canada.

European players are also well served with games played in Caldas da Rainha in Portugal, Bordeaux in France, Newcastle (Australia), Utrecht (Netherlands) and also in areas of the UK, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, Denmark,Italy, Russia and Germany. In some European countries the game is called ‘cross golf’.

The sport is also played in Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Brazil.

However, if you want to play locally and devise your own course, then you can play in several areas. It is part of the unwritten rule of urban golf that you do not play in residential areas or where your actions are likely to cause annoyance and disturbance to people, so head out to disused industrial areas to play, quiet streets, university campuses, meadows, fields and even alongside and across rivers. The only limits to where you play is your imagination.
