Luke Donald golf swing

Colin Montgomerie (below) has enjoyed one of the most successful careers of any European golfer in history, but despite his dominance of the European game for over a decade, a myriad of tournament successes, Ryder Cup wins as player and captain and a successful golf course design business, Monty will forever be one of golf’s least wanted lists. One of the greatest players never to win a Major.

Currently, there are a crop of exciting golfers, some inside the world’s top ten who have shown the skill and ability to land a top major. Some have time on their side, while for others the clock is most certainly ticking. In this article, we’ll look at five players who we believe could well break their Major title duck within the next three years, before the passage of time robs them of the opportunity to remove themselves from alongside Monty’s name on that list.

1. Lee Westwood                      Age: 40                         World Ranking: 12th

In ten of the last 20 Majors Lee Westwood has played in, he has finished inside the top ten. He has finished second twice, third five times in that period. Consitency has never been an issue for Westwood in the Majors, but breaking that barrier to victory has.

Westwood’s problems lie in one club, the putter. At times, his play from tee to green has been far, far superior to any other player in the field, yet his putter has run cold at crucial times.

Now aged 40, Westwood will know the next three years are crucial if he is to end his Majors duck. Augusta 2014 perhaps?

2. Luke Donald                         Age: 35                         World Ranking: 9th

Luke Donald has won 14 professional tournaments, he’s been World Number 1 and all this despite not being one of the longest hitters on tour, when distance from the tee seems to be so crucial in the modern game. In terms of short game though, few rival Donald on and around the greens.

This fact alone should make him a shoe-in for a Major winner but as yet that honour has eluded him. His best placing so far, are a couple of 3rds at the Masters in 2005 and the USPGA in 2006.

Given his accuracy from the tee, impeccable skills around the green and from bunkers, Donald has everything he needs to win the big one. He was in contention at this year’s US Open before falling away in the final round, allowing his great friend Justin Rose to lift the trophy.

Donald’s time will surely come and given his game, he has the ability to win any of these top majors at any point in the next three years.

3. Sergio Garcia                       Age: 33                         World Ranking: 14th

It is incredible to think that Sergio Garcia is still just 33 years of age. Winner of 24 tournaments worldwide, perhaps the most amazing statistic about Garcia, other than his age, is the fact that he is still yet to win a Major title.

He has come very close, with second place finishes at the Open Championship in 2007 and also at the USPGA in 1999 and 2008. He’s also finished 3rd in the US Open and 4th at the Masters.

Garcia’s biggest problem is not his lack of talent, but more his lack of self-belief. Recently he has stated that he doesn’t believe he has what it takes to win a Major event over four days any longer. In 59 starts in a Major, he has finished in the top ten an amazing 18 times.

Sergio Garcia, 2014 US Open Champion? It has a ring to it doesn’t it?

4. Thomas Bjorn                      Age: 42                         World Ranking: 53rd

It is fair to say that Thomas has enjoyed an up and down career, especially in Majors. He has finished second in the big events three times, twice at the British Open and once at the USPGA Championship and has a total of seven top ten finishes from his 49 attempts to win the titles in his career so far.

The likeable Dane has been in better form in recent years after a miserable spell from 2006 to 2010 and he is clear evidence that once you turn 40, you do not have to assume your golf game will hit the skids.

Does Thomas have one last big performance in a major left in him? We think he may, particularly at the British Open at Muirfield, 2013

5. Jason Dufner                        Age: 36                         World Ranking: 21st

Given that he has only burst onto the scene in recent years, it is somewhat shocking to find Jason Dufner is 36 years of age. A supremely talented and educated golfer, Dufner’s easy swing and seemingly carefree, yet quiet demeanour belies a fierce will-to-win.

He’s finished fourth in the last two US Opens and 5th and 2nd in the PGA Championships of 2010 and 2011, when he lost in a play off to Keegan Bradley. Dufner certainly has the game to win a major, the question is, does he have the desire and single-minded attitude to do so?

If he is to win a major in the next three years, the US Open or USPGA Championships look his best chance of doing so.

Hmm it appears like your website ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I as well am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any recommendations for beginner blog writers?
I’d certainly appreciate it.

When I initially commented I clicked the “Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a comment is added
I get three emails with the same comment.
Is there any way you can remove people from that service?
