Tiger Woods - Comeback or Fallback

Eldrick Tont Woods, a.k.a., Tiger Woods, is one of the greatest golfers of all times. Duuhh… Few would challenge this statement. What Woods alone has done for the game of golf is nothing short of extraordinary. People who didn’t know about golf have turned to golf because of Tiger Woods. The man is treated nothing short of a deity in the golfing world. But guess what? Woods is a human being after all!

This point came to the fore during the last year when his marital life collapsed in the face of his confession of infidelity. What should have been a personal matter between husband and wife was turned into full-blown breaking news by the media. That didn’t help at all and the marriage ended in divorce.

Tiger Woods

There were rumors aplenty about Woods quitting golf altogether after his divorce. He held an event to apologize for his misdeeds and vowed that he would try his best to bring his family back together. The biggest question mark was, “Will Tiger Woods be the same player that he was before his divorce?

Tiger Woods added fuel to the fire of the question marks over his game by imposing a hiatus on himself, during which he played no tournament for five months. From the end of 2009, Tiger Woods was off the course for twenty weeks before announcing in March 2010 that he would compete in the Master’s Tournament.

Though Woods did play in a number of tournaments throughout the season, he was unable to win any of them. This was a wakeup call for many golf enthusiasts and experts as Tiger Woods had gone winless for a whole season for the first time since he became a professional in 1996. He is winless in 2011 so far, as well.

So, is a comeback on the cards or not? Well, age is on his side. After all, Woods is still only 35 years old, though it seems like he has been around forever. Being introduced to golf at a very young age enabled him to turn professional at the fairly young age of 20. He is still quite young and in a good shape to make a comeback, if fitness is taken into consideration.

On the flip side, he is facing the worst playing form of his life. His lean patch has being going on for over a year now and he seems to be struggling to become the Tiger Woods of old. There was a time when experts said that Tiger Woods was bad for the game of golf because playing against him, the other golfers could only compete for second spot because they knew who was going to finish first. That’s the silver lining – the rest of the field is starting to shine.

This is not the first time that Tiger Woods has had to face a personal tragedy in life. His father Earl Woods, who was his mentor died in 2006 due to cancer. Woods took a nine-week hiatus after the death and when he came back, he was unable to find form immediately. Though it took some time, the rust wore off and he was able to get his act back together.

Here’s the Nike commercial, that was made before Tiger Woods came back to golf.

It cannot be said for sure whether we should wait for Tiger’s comeback or fallback, because the argument’s in favor of both the outcomes are equal. We can just sit and wait and hope that Tiger Woods is able to pull off a win, sooner rather than later. Well, I guess it has to be later as Woods was eliminated from WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship 2011
But while we wait, let’s enjoy the other great contenders.

Just when I tell my friends that he is going to bounce back this year, he bows out of the 1st round of match play last week. I’m not so sure what to think about him now.

Hi Mike,
Shows that even golf can be cyclic. The game owes much to Tiger – but there are some great new players out there too. Tommy

This design is wicked! You obviously know how to keep a reader amused. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Great job. I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how you presented it. Too cool!
