The 2015 Open Championship

Arguably the toughest of the four Majors, the Open Championship is a serious test even for the most seasoned of professionals.

Betfair make world number one Rory McIlroy their 7/2 favourite to win the title at St Andrews, and the Northern Irishman will definitely be a solid choice following his impressive victory at Royal Liverpool last year.

McIlroy was victorious by a two shot margin from Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia in what proved to be a very close final round. That was Rory’s maiden Open title, and what many golf pundits believe will be the first of many.

While his many focus is likely to be winning the Masters as that is the only Major championship to have alluded McIlroy thus far, he is a master of links golf and should make a bold bid to defend the trophy he captured in 2014.

Play for the 2015 Open Championship will begin on Thursday July 16th at St Andrew’s Old Course. This will be the 144th occasion on which this tournament has taken place, and it is the oldest of the four Major competitions in the golfing calendar. The Open is a very different challenge to the three other Majors, and even some of the world’s very best golfers are unable to adapt to the difficulties that these links courses present. Having first taken place in 1860, the Open currently takes place at a total of ten different golf courses in rotation, with five in Scotland, four in England, and one in Northern Ireland.

The Old Course at St Andrews last played host to the Open in 2010 and that was a particularly memorable tournament due to the fashion in which South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen captured his only Major title to date. Oosthuizen was victorious by a seven shot margin from Lee Westwood and this was the most comfortable victory since 1913. The Betfair odds compilers make Louis Oosthuizen a 50/1 shot to win his second Open Championship in 2015.

Rory-McIlroy-US-Open champion 2011

Although it has been quite some time since Tiger Woods has been in contention for a Major, he still ranks as the second favourite behind Rory McIlory, the American former world number one having been priced up at 11/1 at betfair.com. Woods has previously won the Open on three separate occasions, his last success coming at St Andrews in 2006.

Woods dominated the game of golf from the late 90s until his last Major victory at the US Open in 2008. Since that period, Tiger has been dogged by various injuries, and while he did managed to recapture the world number one spot just over a year ago, another Major championship win has not been forthcoming.

It would appear that Tiger is healthy at the moment and by the time the 144th Open Championship comes around, he could well be back to his best. Should this be the case, the 11/1 currently on offer may look like a very big price indeed. Only time will tell.

Thanks!
