The Best Christmas Buys for a Golfer in 2013 | Part Two: Irons

Last time out we looked at the best drivers available this Christmas in both the top price, mid-price and lower price range.

Given that nowadays many people have different set ups involving fairway woods and hybrids, were skipping these clubs and looking instead at another group of clubs that every golfer has in their bag; irons.

Like last time, Gorilla Golf have been sniffing around the golf shops looking for the best iron deals this Christmas if you fancy buying a loved one a golf gift that they will really love.

Once again, we’ve found three sets of irons to suit all budgets, high, mid and lower priced options.

golf irons for beginners

Irons – Top of the Range (Over £400 per set)

Mizuno MP-4 Irons (4 to PW) (Around £700 to £750 at selected retailers)

If you have a low handicap golfer (from scratch to 4) seeking one of the best sets of irons money can buy this Christmas then the Mizuno MP-4 Irons are definitely amongst the finest clubs you can buy.

Only released in September and the latest in the highly regarded Mizuno range of irons, these clubs come with a plethora of different shaft and grip options to ensure that they are attuned to the swing of the golfer. As such, it is not a good idea to buy these irons ‘off the shelf’ but instead take the lucky recipient of these clubs to a local stockist to get fitted for them.

That is extremely important as at this level and with this standard of club, slight changes to the shaft, clubface angle and grip can all impact on the effectiveness of the swing.

The big feature of the Mizuno MP-4 is Variable Muscle Thickness, which allows for more playable long irons but also more accurate shorter irons. It achieves this by having a larger ‘sweet spot’ allowing for a more consistent trajectory from the club face.

These irons are top quality and give golfers with the ability the control over their ball flight and the best feedback from the club you can buy.

We fully expect to see plenty of golfers using these high quality irons on tour in 2014.

Irons – Mid Price Value (£250 – £400 per set)

Taylor Made RocketBladez Tour Irons (4 to PW) (Around £399 at selected retailers RRP £609)

If you are on a bigger budget or have a golfer who is ready to move on from their first set of irons and onto a set that offers more control and feel from the fairway, then there are few better deals available at the moment than the Taylor Made RocketBladez Tour Irons.

Currently available at just under £400 from selected stockists, this is the set of irons used on tour by many Taylor Made professionals Dustin Johnson, Sean O’Hair and they were in the bag of Englishman Justin Rose when he lifted the US Open in 2013.

Fans of a more traditional golf iron will like the look of the RocketBladez Tour irons. They are unfussy, but it is clear that this is a quality construction. The speed pocket on the reverse of the clubs helps achieve great distance, which Taylor Made claim will make you, on average, 11 yards longer when compared to other irons available.

Lowering of the weight of the club head means that this club promotes higher launch angles, ensuring a steeper, softer landing on the green.

These are the ideal irons for a golfer who has moved on from their cavity backed set and is looking for something that affords more distance and control, but at a price that is still £200 cheaper than the RRP.

Irons – Budget Belter (Under £250 per set)

Callaway RAZR X Black Irons Set (4 to PW) (Around £249 from selected retailers  RRP £609)

One of the great things about a company bringing out a new set of irons is that you can often pick up an outstanding deal on a set barely a year or two old and without doubt, this is the case with the striking Callaway Golf RAZR X Black Irons.

At a RRP of £609, you can now pick up a stunning set of these beautiful clubs for just under £250.

This is an ideal set of top quality irons for a player who is relatively new to the game and wants to improve all aspects of their iron play. They afford the player distance and accuracy both from the fairway and the rough.

Callaway have moved the centre of gravity 12% lower and 15% deeper by redistributing the weight in the back cavity, meaning that the iron not only offers greater swing speed, but more forgiving accuracy on off-centre hits, combined with great distance.

Quite simply, if you have a relative newcomer to the sport who wants their first real set of irons that will make a significant impact upon their game, the Callaway RAZR X Black Irons is an absolute bargain at under £350. Now that the full set of irons (4 to PW) is available for under £250, this may be the best golf bargain available this Christmas.
