It is difficult enough at times to play golf traditionally. The struggle from tee to green is one that most golfers have problems with at times, but for some, that isn’t tough enough.
For a select few, such as American golf-genius Phil Mickelson, they polish their skills to the utmost and create some of the most bewildering golfing trick shots imaginable. Listed below are five of Gorilla Golf Blog’s best golf trick shots, featuring some names you will be familiar with and a few who you won’t…
5. Phil Mickelson’s Backward Shot
Although Rory McIlroy may now perform a variant of this shot for a television advert on UK TV, it was American golfing genius Phil Mickelson who first popularised this amazing shot.
Any golfer can propel the ball forwards, or even slice or hook it to either side but you have to be unbelievably talented (or able to defy the laws of physics) to send the ball arching back over your head. What I find amazing about this particular shot is just how close it ends up to the hole.
4. Jon McLean’s Unbelievable Flop Shot
One of the most skilled shots in golf, that draws gasps of admiration from the watching crowd, is the flop shot. The ability to get the ball high into the air and back down again, in an incredibly short distance is a skill that few master.
In this staggering video Jon McLean and someone who we can only assume is a very, very good, loyal and trusting friend, shows us that it is not just the top tour pros who can master this amazing skill.
3. Miguel Angel Jiminez ‘Off the Wall’ shot
It is one thing to see trick shots played when the pressure is off, but when it is in the throes of a tournament, especially a major, it is something else. Here cigar-smoking Spaniard Miguel Angel Jiminez finds himself in all kinds of trouble on St. Andrews famous 17th Road Hole.
Unable to take a clear swing from his usual position due to the wall, Miguel creates his own shot. This ball could have ended up literally anywhere, so its final position on the green is somewhat miraculous!
2. Geoff Swain’s juggling and disappearing club head
Everyone remembers the Nike advertisement where Tiger Woods juggled the golf ball before slamming it away. The eye-hand coordination to perform that shot is truly staggering and here, world Golf Trick Shot Champion Geoff Swain, adorned in a pair of flip flops, shows us that it is not only Tiger that can do this.
Best of all, following the incredible finale, watch in amazement as Geoff makes the driver club head disappear before your very eyes. Now that is truly a trick shot!
1. Vijay Singh, bouncing bomb hole in one
You are playing Augusta on a practice round before the Masters, the famous 16th par three across water has provided many exceptional moments in golf, but on this day Vijay Singh provided us with a unique moment to treasure.
Skipping his ball across the lake onto the green wasn’t enough for the Fijian as his ball skipped off the lake, onto the green, rolling around the curves and into the hole. An amazing shot, but one it would be difficult to replicate when challenging for the Green Jacket on Sunday afternoon!
Not to be outdone, this year Martin Kaymer attempted the same shot, with the same astonishing result!
Oh and if you are under any illusions how difficult some of these shots are to complete successfully, take a look at Tiger’s outtake video from his famous advert below!
