The Youngest U.S. Open Champion - Rory McIlroy

Gerry McIlroy received yesterday the best Father’s Day gift he could have ever hoped as Rory McIlroy became the youngest U.S. Open Champion since Bobby Jones in 1923.

“Happy Father’s Day dad, this one’s for you. But I have to mention my mum as well, who’s back home watching. I can’t thank them enough” were the first words from the newly crowned 22 year old champion.

It was great to see that Rory McIlroy was able to overcome his mishap at the Masters and was in a perfect physical and mental shape.

Here’s a video of Rory McIlroy’s 72nd hole in the 2011 U.S. Open Championship

Let’s hear also from the Champion:

I’m pretty sure John McDermott at age 19 and then again at 20 was the youngest player to ever win the US Open in 1911 and 1912 respectively. He was also the first American to win it , thus breaking Britain’s hold on the cup since it’s inception in 1895.
