Since there are 28 matches that will be played, there are 28 points up for grabs. The US are the holders, so they will only need 14 points to retain the Ryder Cup trophy. In order for the UK to take possession of the trophy, they must win the tournament with 14 ½ points. If each team walks away with 14 points, the US will hold the trophy for two more years.

Eight points will be awarded on each one of the first couple of days. Both days will follow the same format: Four fourball matches to be held in the morning, and four foursomes to be held in the afternoon. In the fourball matches, each one of the players will play their own ball, while in the foursomes players will hit alternate shots using the same ball.

The major excitement for the Ryder Cup will come on the last day when all 12 players from each team will play 12 head-to-head match play single rounds.

The Ryder Cup in Wales

The 2010 Ryder Cup marks the first time in the tournament’s history that it will be played in Wales. The field of play will be the Celtic Manor Resort. After it won the rights to host the 2010 Ryder Cup tournament, Celtic Manor was redesigned into the purpose-built venue that it is today, and is now called the 2010 course. The course as officially opened in 2007.

The History of the Ryder Cup

Ryder Cup 1927The first Ryder Cup to be played was in 1927. Back then, the game was played between the British PGA and the US. The tournament location was Worcester, Massachusetts. The US won easily, but Britain was able to take their first tournament on home turf two years later at Leeds.

The history of the cup goes back to a match that was played informally between the two countries in 1921. It was played at Gleneagles in Scotland, where Britain won. Another informal, unofficial match was later played in 1926. The British won this match as well.

In 1973, Great Britain extended their team to include players from Ireland. In 1979, they further extended the team to include all European teams. This was decided after a long series of American dominance from 1959 to 1983. The European team claimed its first victory at Belfry in 1985. This was their first win of 8 in the 12 most recently.
