Pinehurst No. 2 Restoration Project

What’s the one thing you think about when you envision a U.S. Open venue, deep rough right? Hosel grabbing, slashing, hay-flying, advance it 10 feet rough.

Well not in 2014, however at Pinehurst No. 2.  In an interview with John Huggan of The Scotsman,  Bill Coore who has been working with Ben Crenshaw to restore Pinehurst No. 2, gave word that the 2014 US Open and the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open will be the first to showcase no rough.

“Mike Davis (the USGA’s director of rules and competition) has told me the 2014 US Open will be the first to be played on a course with no rough. We wanted to make sure they were comfortable with what we were doing and they are. Some of the fairways are going to be 40 yards wide, but they say that is fine with them. Mike says they will not grow rough. Which will be unbelievable. I really hope it happens. If they get the fairways firm, the course will be just as difficult.”

Pinehurst No. 2, has one major mode of defense-the crowned greens, and the vast collection areas making an up and down nearly impossible for mortal souls. The green complexes are massive,  with the contours, sloping, and speed, the target areas quite minuscule.

Crenshaw and Coore are going back to an older version of Donald Ross’ design, bringing back sandy deposits throughout the course that were filled in with rough over the years, in addition to restoring the greens complexes. Here, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw talk about the design changes in store:

Pinehurst No.2 reopens in March 2011 with firmer and wider fairways that provide more strategic options from the tee. We can’t wait!
